20 years ago - Fire and rescue companies are still the center of community social activity in many places in Frederick County, and fears that that could change seem to underlie votes cast against a report on the future of the fire service last week. “If the county takes control of our budgets, or we get paid people, you’ll be more like you’re working for somebody, and it just won’t be the same,” said Donald Stitely, president of Guardian Hose Company of Thurmont.

100 years ago - Ira W. Patterson, aged 19 years, 8 months and 3 days, a clerk in the Congressional Library in Washington, was drowned in the Potomac River near Point of Rocks, on Saturday evening about 7 o’clock.

John A. Scroggins, colored, of Lime Kiln, was found dead, lying along the tracks of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, about three-fourths of a mile from Lime Kiln, about 4 o’clock yesterday morning, by Jacob Weedon, colored. He was 31 years old, and leaves a wife and several children.

The right arm of Geneva Miller, 8-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Wm. Miller, West Seventh street, was badly lacerated by the explosion of fireworks on Friday night.
