Last year this time, almost to the day, I took a taxi across Western Sahara. I bought my ticket the day before at the garage in Nouadhibou, a northern coastal town in Mauritania, where I lived and taught for the previous three years. The next morning I showed up, met my fellow passengers and off we went. That taxi ride would be followed by a bus to Marrakech, a boat to Spain, trains in Italy and eventually, a plane home from Istanbul. more »
